The project ongoing for over seven years and over 600+ individual unique collages created from 40+ different species were created and applied to the streets. “All my collage works are original and unique. None of them are copies, prints, or stickers. That is all organic. I make them with traditional methods.”

The animal images not only bring about an immediate reaction of compassion, but also due their ubiquity, archaicness and approachability exist beyond all norms and biases. Every single frame of the movement of the animals is created individually, and makes up the cohesive walking animation when watched back to back thus bringing motion and life to the image of the animal.

The singular animals that are installed on the walls are actually each a single moment of continuous inertia. The passer-by on the street does not only see “an animal”, but also gets to witness “a moment”

Places and Maps

“In the ongoing project, each of the animals implemented on the streets was marked with photos on Google Maps.

Thus, viewers can also find the opportunity to experience the city with a completely different route and awareness perception. You can find the animals on Google Maps. Where you can see the street applications until today.”

The installation locations are all spaces that the urban life passes through: outside of buildings, sometimes the insides, walls, the pavement, abudments… These, the cities indeed, are spaces that these animals would normally not exist, nor would they ever want to. One can’t think of a rhino or a moose to calmly just pass through Kadife Street, or a bear quietly strolling down the Yüksek Kaldırım staircase in broad daylight. There are just a few species that have managed to adapt to the city habitat, cats, dogs, some birds, insects and bacteria. There isn’t much chance we could encounter any other creature anyways. We would not let them.

Extinction and documenting

“Another layer of the project is superior to following and documenting the wear, aging and extinction processes. This entire process is documented and published in the social media account of the project. The posts, comments and opinions of social media followers are also published in the same way.”

“Kaybid’s animals that are wandering the streets silently may remind the viewer that the world does not only belong to humans, or that the urban ecosystem is one that actually is quite alien to the organic realm.”

By showcasing his art in urban bubbles, he’s reminding people that don’t usually think about wild animals that there are endangered species fighting for space and struggling to survive. Kaybid has made animal and climate conservation a known priority. Kaybid works in tandem with the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) to create merchandise that funds animal conservation efforts in Turkey.

“The cities come into being independently of the rhythms of nature. They treat nature and natural life as a mere commodity in it’s coming into being. Sand is a singularized item that is to be converted into glass; marble is something only if it is a column or a gravestone; a wooden staircase; an elevator or like window blinds… Hence nature can exist only as a utility or a decoration, as a side to the main constructed being that is the city. A tree in a rectangular pot on wheels exists on the rooftop only to be rolled around to provide us shade as we pick where we want to be.”
